In the league stage, Punjab had finished first and RCB second. These two teams faced off in Qualifier 1, where RCB defeated Punjab to reach the final. Punjab then beat Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to set up a rematch with RCB in the final.
RCB has become the eighth team to win the IPL title. They clinched the championship on their fourth attempt.
Previously, RCB had lost three finals — in 2009 to Deccan Chargers by 6 runs, in 2011 to Chennai Super Kings, and in 2016 to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Punjab, meanwhile, ended up as runners-up for the second time. Their first final appearance was in 2014, where they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders.
