Mumbai Advances to Second Qualifier After Defeating Gujarat Titans in Eliminator
Mumbai Indians have qualified for the second qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after defeating Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in the eliminator match held at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, Punjab.
Chasing a target of 229 runs, Gujarat managed to score only 208 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Although opener Sai Sudharsan scored a brilliant 80 runs off 49 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six, it wasn’t enough to secure victory for Gujarat. He shared an 84-run partnership for the third wicket with Washington Sundar, who contributed 48 runs from 24 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Kusal Mendis added 20 runs off 10 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford scored 24 from 15 balls. Shahrukh Khan was dismissed for 13 runs, and Rahul Tewatia remained unbeaten on 16.
For Mumbai, Trent Boult claimed 2 wickets, while Ashwini Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Richard Gleeson, and Mitchell Santner took one wicket each.
Earlier, Mumbai chose to bat first after winning the toss and posted a total of 228 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 20 overs.
Skipper Rohit Sharma played a crucial knock, scoring 81 runs off 50 balls, smashing 9 boundaries and 4 sixes.
With this win, Mumbai will now face Punjab Kings in the second qualifier.
Rohit Leads Strong Start as Mumbai Sets Big Total Against Gujarat
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma formed a solid opening partnership of 84 runs with Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow contributed 47 runs off just 22 deliveries, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes.
For the second wicket, Rohit added another 59 runs in partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 33 runs from 20 balls, including 1 four and 3 sixes.
Tilak Varma smashed 25 runs off 11 balls with the help of 3 sixes before getting out, while Naman Dhir was dismissed for 9 runs off 6 balls. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 22 runs from 9 balls.
For Gujarat Titans, Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna picked up 2 wickets each, while Mohammad Siraj took one.
The second qualifier will be held on Sunday in Ahmedabad. The winner of that match will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL final. RCB had already secured their place in the final by defeating Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in the first qualifier.
