Chennai's Victory Delivers a Blow to Kolkata
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a defeat against Chennai Super Kings, who were at the bottom of the league table.
Chennai clinched the win by 2 wickets with 2 balls to spare. With this loss, Kolkata’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs now rest only on mathematical possibilities.
Chasing a target of 180 runs, Chennai achieved the score in 19.4 overs, losing 8 wickets in the process.
Openers Ayush Mehatra and Devon Conway were dismissed for ducks. Following them, Urvil Patel was out for 31, Ravichandran Ashwin for 8, and Ravindra Jadeja for 19. Chennai could only manage 60 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
Then, Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube formed a crucial 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket to revive the innings. Brevis, who scored a half-century, smashed 4 fours and 4 sixes off just 25 balls.
With 10 runs needed from the last 8 balls, Shivam Dube was dismissed for 44 by Vaibhav Arora.
Requiring 8 runs in the final over, MS Dhoni hit a six on the very first delivery, making the chase easier. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 17, while Anshul stayed not out on 4 to guide Chennai to victory.
In bowling, Vaibhav Arora took 3 wickets for 48 runs in 3 overs. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy grabbed 2 wickets each.
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, Kolkata Knight Riders posted a total of 179 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane was the top scorer with 48 runs off 33 balls, hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes. Andre Russell added 38 runs, while Manish Pandey remained unbeaten on 36. Sunil Narine also contributed with 26 runs.
In bowling, Noor Ahmad was the standout performer for Chennai, taking 4 wickets for 31 runs in his 4-over spell.
With this result, Kolkata now sits in sixth place on the points table with 11 points. Their chances of making the playoffs have become extremely slim and depend solely on mathematical possibilities. Chennai, with their third win, has moved up to 6 points.
