Vaibhav's teenage journey to a century in cricket.
Teen Prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi Smashes Record-Breaking Century in IPL 2025
Rajasthan Royals' young opener, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, made history by smashing a sensational century in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) at just 14 years old. On Monday, during a match against Gujarat Titans, Vaibhav scored a breathtaking 101 runs off just 38 balls, hitting 7 fours and 11 sixes, leading Rajasthan to an 8-wicket victory. Chasing a target of 210, Rajasthan wrapped up the game in just 15.5 overs with only two wickets down — all thanks to Vaibhav’s extraordinary knock.
He reached his century in style, hitting world-class spinner Rashid Khan for a six over midwicket on the second ball of the 11th over. Vaibhav became the youngest player in T20 history to score a century — at the age of 14 years and 32 days — putting on a fearless show against bowlers like Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Rashid Khan. Before him, the record for the youngest T20 centurion was held by Maharashtra’s Vijay Zol, who scored a hundred at 18 years and 118 days in 2013.
Vaibhav's 35-ball century is the second-fastest in IPL history, just behind Chris Gayle’s 30-ball hundred in 2013 for Bangalore against Pune Warriors. He also broke Yusuf Pathan’s 15-year-old record of the fastest IPL century by an Indian (37 balls in 2010 for Rajasthan against Mumbai). Additionally, he surpassed Manish Pandey’s record (century at 19 years and 253 days in 2009 for Bangalore), becoming the youngest centurion in IPL history.
Rajasthan Royals were on the verge of elimination after going winless in their last five games. Painful close losses — including a Super Over defeat to Delhi, a narrow 2-run loss to Lucknow, and an 11-run loss to Bangalore — had pushed them to the edge. With playoff hopes hanging by a thread, they desperately needed one of their openers to deliver something special — and Vaibhav did just that.
Fearless and Fiery: Vaibhav’s Explosive Start Shakes Gujarat Titans
Mohammed Siraj, known for his impactful performances in the powerplay this season, began with intent. In the very first over, after delivering two sharp dot balls, he bowled a brilliant length delivery that beat Vaibhav. But the young batter responded in style — launching the very next ball for a straight six to open his account. He managed just 2 runs from the remaining five balls of the over.
Then came the fireworks. In the fourth over, against India’s veteran pacer Ishant Sharma, Vaibhav exploded — smashing three sixes and two fours, collecting a massive 28 runs in the over. From that moment on, both Gujarat and Rajasthan players — along with the crowd — were glued to his bat. Bowlers kept changing, but Vaibhav’s fearless approach remained the same.
Displaying a mature and fearless batting style far beyond his age, Vaibhav made the Jaipur pitch his own. His powerful and confident shots left even top-tier bowlers searching for answers. And since he's a newcomer to the IPL, teams have yet to fully study his weaknesses or strengths — adding to the chaos he created at the crease.
In the next over, off-spinner Washington Sundar was taken to task, conceding two sixes. Vaibhav then reached his maiden IPL half-century with a boundary off the last ball of the fifth over — achieving it in just 17 balls. This made him the fastest to a fifty this season, surpassing Nicholas Pooran of the Lucknow Super Giants, who took 18 balls.
Vaibhav slightly shifted gears in the sixth and seventh overs, playing more cautiously against Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals had already made a dream start — reaching 91 runs without loss at the end of 7 overs. On the final ball of the eighth over, he launched Prasidh Krishna for a six over long-off, continuing his dominant display.
Afghanistan’s medium-pacer Karim Janat made his IPL debut, but instead of making an impact with the ball, he ended up facing the heat. In his very first over, he found himself under immense pressure as a young batter took full advantage of Janat’s nerves, smashing him for four sixes and two fours in the 10th over, collecting a total of 30 runs in a single over.
That young batter quickly raced to 94 runs off just 34 balls and was on the verge of a historic century. On the second ball of the 11th over, he hit Rashid Khan for a six and became the youngest player to score a century in IPL history.
His performance was so incredible that even Gujarat’s players, fans, and supporters gave him a standing ovation. The atmosphere in the Rajasthan camp was electrifying. In the dressing room, everyone stood and applauded, including head coach Rahul Dravid, who rose from his chair to clap in admiration. Known for grooming young talent, Dravid’s faith and investment in this youngster had clearly paid off — his smile said it all.
The dream knock came to an end in the 12th over when he was bowled by Prasidh Krishna on the fifth delivery, but by then, his team had already reached a commanding 166 for 2. The youngster’s fearless approach, technique, and bold stroke play against a strong bowling lineup were highly praiseworthy. Even after his dismissal, Gujarat’s players and the dugout gave him a warm round of applause.
After the match, he shared that he prefers to play based on the ball rather than the bowler. “For the past five or six months, I’ve been working hard to perform like this. Scoring a century was a dream come true. I like to play by watching the ball, not focusing on who’s bowling,” he said after being awarded the Player of the Match.
This was only his third IPL innings. With regular captain Sanju Samson ruled out of the season due to injury, the youngster had made his debut just last week against Lucknow in Jaipur, where he impressed everyone by hitting a six on the very first ball he faced from Shardul Thakur.
In that debut match, he scored 34 runs off 20 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours, showing his potential. He had been stumped while trying to attack Aiden Markram. In the next game against Bangalore, he smashed two sixes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and scored 16 runs. But in his third game, he delivered a dream performance against Gujarat with a record-breaking century — justifying every penny spent on him in the auction.
